Winter is just around the corner, and snow and frigid conditions are on the way. Temperature drops can wreak havoc on your equipment, but that doesn’t have to be the case. That’s right; just because icy conditions are in the forecast doesn’t mean you have to freeze your business, too.
In this edition of the Ditch Witch West blog, let’s take a look at how to prepare for the winter months ahead, including 5 tips for winterizing trenchers.
#1 Check Trencher Teeth Regularly
Did you know that teeth wear faster in cooler temperatures? Soil hardens and becomes more abrasive, putting extra pressure and wear and tear on trencher teeth. Check your teeth twice a day (in the morning before use and after use). Minimize downtime by keeping fresh teeth on hand when out on the jobsite.
#2 Check Coolant Levels
Ensure all your fluids are running properly. If you’re unsure how to check your fluids, be sure to bring your equipment to our expert-trained service technicians for routine seasonal maintenance. Tailor your antifreeze:water mixture for the lowest anticipated temperatures over the winter months.
#3 Run Your Machine Regularly
Before use, be sure to warm up your machine. In extremely cold temperatures, keep the machine running for as long as possible to prevent freeze-overs or temperature-related mechanical failures. If you’re storing your machine away for any length of time during the winter months, continue to turn your engine on every day to keep the hydraulics and oils warm and fluid.
#4 Check Chain Tension
Lower temperatures can cause chains to wear faster (and potentially crack). Be sure to check chain tension, ensuring strength and longevity, while also reducing the risk that debris enters in and erodes at the chain components.
#5 Grease Up
Properly greasing your components help to reduce friction and wear and tear. Just before the winter temperature drops is the perfect time to have all of your grease points serviced.
